In the summer of 2024, my person and I took a trip from Oakland, California to Basalt, Colorado to visit with family. We had planned to spend a few days after family time visiting the Grand Canyon, but in the massive heat dome over much of the USA, our vehicle lost air conditioning. Getting it fixed led us to stop in Utah, and we ended up at a small RV park for a few days. The desert landscape is beautiful, and I began experimenting with combinations of green, orange-red, and black inks, using lines and stippling. The resulting drawings attempt to abstract and capture how spending unexpected time in such a different environment became an opportunity to explore new forms. (read more)
These works are drawn with 3 fountain pens on Holbein Multi-Drawing book paper. Currently, these are smaller pieces in 3F (8-5/8″ x 10-5/8″) and SM (9-1/4″ x 6-1/2″) sizes, and most are created in the field. The 3F book is drawn using a Pilot Vanishing Point fine nib pen with Platinum Carbon Black ink, a Sensa with a Schmidt’s fine nib with Pelikan Dunkelgrün ink, and a medium nib Sensa with Noodler’s Apache Sunset ink. The SM book is the first use in my work of a new pigment based ink, Tom’s Studio #60, in a Super5 .5 stub nib pen instead of the Vanishing Point.
